“President Obama installed a basketball court at the White House.”
TL;DR ·President Obama adapted the White House tennis court for basketball by adding lines and hoops.
President Barack Obama modified the existing outdoor tennis court on the White House South Lawn shortly after taking office in 2009 to allow for full-court basketball games. While the White House already featured a small outdoor half-court installed in 1991, the adaptation of the tennis court involved resurfacing, painting new lines, and installing removable basketball hoops (White House Archives). This modification was a low-cost adaptation and did not involve the demolition of historical structures, contrary to recurring social media misinformation (Snopes). The basketball markings were eventually removed in 2020 during the construction of a new tennis pavilion under the Trump administration (National Capital Planning Commission).
