“Renewable energy is a scam.”
LEANS FALSE · MEDIUM CONFIDENCE
TL;DR ·Documented criminal frauds and deceptive marketing exist, but renewable energy is also a legitimate, cost-competitive technology.
The claim that renewable energy is a scam is a MIXTURE of documented criminal cases and legitimate industrial utility. While the technology itself is the cheapest and fastest-growing source of electricity with costs falling by up to 90% since 2010 , there are significant instances of fraud within the sector. For example, the investigation into DC Solar uncovered a massive criminal plot involving phony lease agreements and false financial statements between 2011 and 2018 . Authorities note that scammers often exploit the green halo around renewables to defraud seniors and do-gooders . Additionally, some critics argue that the industry relies on artificial political solutions and subsidies rather than market viability , and that some entities claim green energy credits for projects they never actually complete . While some green power programs have been described as deceptive in their marketing , other experts argue that the true scam involves politicians who hoard renewable resources for their own constituents while publicly opposing them elsewhere . Because the term scam is applied to both specific criminal acts and broad policy disagreements , the claim lacks the nuance to distinguish between the technology and its bad actors.
