As of December 3, 2025, the total gross national debt stood at a colossal $38.40 trillion 1. Fast forward to January 2026, and the debt had nudged up to an all-time high of $38.521 trillion 4. Even the Q3 2025 figures, updated as recently as January 22, 2026, put it at $37.637 trillion 12. So, for all the doomsayers and drama queens who uncritically swallowed this egregious claim, perhaps a quick glance at actual data from reliable sources like the Joint Economic Committee 1, Trading Economics 4, or FRED 12 would be a wise investment. The debt is high, yes, but it hasn't yet hit the mythical $40 trillion mark. Apparently, a difference of nearly $1.5 trillion is just a minor detail for some when crafting a sensational headline. Oh, the humanity! Or rather, oh, the lack of basic reading comprehension! 2. Perhaps the claimant needs a new calculator, or a stronger grasp of what "exceeded" actually means.
