Subcontractors for the Obama Presidential Center are owed millions of dollars.

As of June 2026, multiple subcontractors involved in the construction of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago have documented claims for millions of dollars in unpaid work. According to reports from The Real Deal and Fox News Digital, several firms have filed mechanic's liens and lawsuits, including a 40 million dollar federal suit by II in One Concrete alleging that discriminatory practices and excessive inspections led to massive financial losses (The Real Deal, 2026). The African American Contractors Association has stated that at least seven subcontractors are currently pursuing missing seven-figure payments just days before the center's June 19 grand opening (Fox News, 2026). While the Obama Foundation maintains that it has fully paid the project's general contractor, Lakeside Alliance, and has no direct outstanding debts, the legal and financial records of the subcontractors confirm that substantial balances remain in dispute (Chicago Tribune, 2025). Lakeside Alliance has characterized these issues as standard reconciliation processes for a project that has seen its budget balloon to 850 million dollars, yet the impacted small businesses report that the lack of payment has placed them in severe financial jeopardy (Newsweek, 2025).
