“Jobs dropped out of Reed College after the first six months but remained as a drop-in student for another 18 months.”
Steve Jobs enrolled at Reed College in 1972 but withdrew as a formal student after one semester to avoid depleting his parents' savings. As documented in his 2005 Stanford commencement address and Walter Isaacson's authorized biography, Jobs remained on campus for an additional 18 months as a drop-in student. During this time, he audited classes that piqued his curiosity, most notably a calligraphy course that later influenced the typography of the Macintosh computer. Reed College historical archives and the Steve Jobs Archive confirm his enrollment in the fall of 1972 and his subsequent period of unofficial study while living in dorm rooms with friends. This experience provided the creative foundation for his later work in personal computing and design.
