WHAT WE FOUND

The peanut shape refers to the internal radiation case of advanced thermonuclear weapons, most notably the U.S. W88 warhead used on Trident II missiles. This geometry features two joined chambers that house the fission primary and fusion secondary stages in a compact, dual-lobed configuration. This design is engineered to optimize the flow of X-ray radiation during implosion while fitting within the narrow, tapered profile of modern conical reentry vehicles. Public knowledge of this specific shape emerged in 1999 through investigative reports by the San Jose Mercury News and The New York Times, as well as the declassified findings of the Cox Report on nuclear espionage. North Korea also showcased a similarly shaped device in 2017 to signal its achievement of warhead miniaturization for long-range delivery. While this configuration is not universal to all nuclear weapons, it is a well-documented technical standard for high-yield payloads in contemporary ballistic missile systems.
