“The Great Wall of China is visible from the Moon with the naked eye.”
HIGH CONFIDENCE
TL;DR ·The Great Wall cannot be seen from the Moon with the naked eye.
The claim is false. NASA states that the wall isn't visible from the moon and is difficult or impossible to see from Earth orbit without aid . A peer-reviewed analysis concluded that not even the best human eyes could see the Great Wall from space, because of the limits of human visual resolution . Snopes notes the wall is almost invisible from only 180 miles up, so a view from the Moon, about 240,000 miles away, is far less plausible . WTAMU Physics also reports that it is not visible to the naked eye even from low-earth orbit . Britannica says astronauts disproved the claim , Scientific American says remote-sensing specialists and astronauts call it false , and Science Focus says no man-made structure is visible from the Moon . Chris Hadfield said it is too narrow and follows the natural contours of the land . One outlier, a 2004 Guardian report, quotes Gene Cernan saying it is visible from 160 to 320 km orbit . That concerns low Earth orbit, not the Moon, and does not support the claim. High-credibility sources agree that the claim is a myth.
