“Can you be racist and a supporter of race at the same time”
TL;DR ·Supporting racial hierarchies or specific racial interests can occur while upholding systemic racism.
Hello there! It is a bit of a complex question, but based on modern sociological research, the answer is TRUE. You can indeed be racist while being a supporter of race, though it often depends on how you define those terms! First, many experts define racism as a system of power and disadvantage, rather than just a personal feeling or attitude . Because of this, someone might believe they are simply supporting their own racial group or the concept of 'race' while actually reinforcing harmful hierarchies . In fact, the history of scientific racism shows that people have long tried to use biological 'facts' about race to justify racist beliefs and systems . It is also important to note that racism and prejudice are not the same thing . While anyone can have personal prejudices, racism is often described as prejudice plus power . Therefore, a person in a dominant social position might see themselves as a 'supporter' of their race, but their actions can still contribute to the everyday flow of systemic racism that hurts others . Even 'neutral' facts can be used in ways that are considered racist if they are intended to maintain unequal access to resources .
