“Barack Obama stated that America is no longer a Christian nation.”
LEANS TRUE · HIGH CONFIDENCE
TL;DR ·Obama used the phrase but qualified it to describe America's broad religious pluralism.
Barack Obama did use the specific phrase, but the claim is MISLEADING because it frequently strips away context and qualifiers that change the meaning of his remarks . In a June 2006 speech, then-Senator Obama stated, Whatever we once were, we are no longer a Christian nation, at least, not just, before listing other faiths including Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism to illustrate American pluralism . As president in April 2009, he remarked during a press conference in Turkey that Americans do not consider ourselves a Christian nation, or a Muslim nation, but rather a nation of citizens bound by a shared set of values . High-credibility fact-checking organizations and archival reviews have noted that removing the qualifier at least, not just creates a false impression that the statement was a rejection of the nation's Christian population or heritage rather than an acknowledgement of its diversity .
