“While at Reed College, Jobs slept on the floor in friends' rooms and returned Coke bottles for 5-cent deposits to buy food.”
The claim accurately reflects Steve Jobs' personal account of his time at Reed College. During his 2005 Stanford University commencement address, Jobs described dropping out after six months but staying on campus as an unofficial student for another 18 months. Without a dorm room, he slept on the floor in his friends' rooms and funded his meals by returning Coca-Cola bottles for five-cent deposits. This biographical detail is corroborated by Walter Isaacson's authorized biography and Reed College's own historical archives. Jobs also noted that he walked seven miles every Sunday to a Hare Krishna temple for free meals, a detail that emphasizes the financial hardship he faced before returning to California to co-found Apple.
