MISLEADING

Windows later copied the typography and fonts used in the Macintosh.

While Microsoft was inspired by the Macintosh focus on proportional typography, the claim that it copied Apple fonts is inaccurate. Steve Jobs famously credited his calligraphy training for the Mac typefaces, and Microsoft did follow this graphical user interface model. However, the two companies actually collaborated in the late 1980s to develop the TrueType font standard to avoid royalty payments to Adobe. Microsoft licensed its own core fonts like Arial and Times New Roman from the Monotype Corporation rather than copying Apple proprietary designs. Additionally, both companies drew heavily from earlier innovations at Xerox PARC. That research facility pioneered bitmapped displays and variable-width fonts in the 1970s before either the Macintosh or Windows existed. Readers should consult the official history of TrueType on Microsoft Learn or the records of the Apple v. Microsoft copyright lawsuit to understand the specific licensing agreements involved.
