TL;DR ·Jackie Kennedy led a comprehensive restoration project that transformed the White House interiors.
Jacqueline Kennedy directed a major restoration project to transform the White House interiors into a historical showcase . She hired interior decorator Sister Parish and appointed collector Henry Francis du Pont to assist in the effort . Her goal was to resurrect and retrieve historical furniture and art lost over the prior 160 years . This task involved the State Rooms, private family quarters, and guest rooms . Kennedy also established the Fine Arts Committee for the White House to rebuild the collection of art and porcelain . The project cost approximately $2 million and inspired a national movement for historic preservation .
