“A modern nuclear weapon detonates at a pre-programmed altitude during its descent towards the target.”
TL;DR ·Modern nuclear weapons are designed to detonate at a specific, pre-programmed altitude during their descent.
Hello there! Let's explore the fascinating, albeit serious, topic of how nuclear weapons are designed to detonate. It's true that a modern nuclear weapon is engineered to detonate at a pre-programmed altitude during its descent towards a target . When a ballistic missile is launched, it follows a multi-phase journey: first, it climbs through the atmosphere (the boost phase), then coasts through outer space along a pre-programmed route (the mid-course phase), and finally, it begins its descent back to Earth towards its target (known as the terminal phase) . Sources indicate that during this terminal phase, the weapon detonates at a specifically chosen height . The altitude of detonation, often referred to as the height of burst, is a critical factor and is specifically chosen to achieve particular effects . For example, a detonation at altitudes ranging from about 30 to 500 kilometers is suitable for generating an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), which can disrupt electronic systems over large areas on the ground . Other altitudes are chosen to minimize ground fallout or maximize initial radiation for specific distances . Historically, high-altitude nuclear tests were conducted in series like HARDTACK and FISHBOWL . These factors demonstrate that the detonation altitude is indeed a pre-programmed and intentional part of a weapon's mission .
