Nixon added a private one-lane bowling alley in 1969 funded by personal friends.
“President Nixon built a bowling alley at the White House.”
President Richard Nixon had a one-lane bowling alley installed under the North Portico of the White House in 1969 . While Harry Truman inaugurated the first White House bowling alley in 1947 , Nixon commissioned this additional lane to provide a more private facility . High-credibility government records specify that the project was paid for by his friends, including Charles Rebozo, rather than with taxpayer money . Before this installation, Nixon frequently used the existing lanes in the Old Executive Office Building .
