“Barack Obama stated that the early morning call of the Azan (Islamic call to worship) is the most beautiful sound on earth.”
HIGH CONFIDENCE
TL;DR ·Obama did describe the call to prayer as one of the prettiest sounds on Earth.
Evidence from high-credibility sources confirms that during a 2007 interview with New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, Barack Obama recalled living in Indonesia and hearing the azaan (the Muslim call to prayer) . He described it as one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset . While some secondary sources and social media paraphrases use the superlative most beautiful , the original documented quote uses the phrase one of the prettiest . Obama noted that he heard the sound at dawn and dusk, which aligns with the claim's mention of the early morning call . High-credibility fact-checkers confirm the quote's origin in the 2007 interview, though they also note that other claims regarding his religious affiliation derived from this quote have been debunked as products of dishonest editing .
