Hi there! It's a pleasure to help you clarify this bit of tech history. This claim is misleading because it misinterprets the length of Steve Jobs' time away from Apple. While Jobs famously said 'During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar' [3, 5, 11], his total absence actually lasted about twelve years, from 1985 until 1997 [6, 10, 12]. Additionally, while he did found NeXT shortly after leaving Apple [1, 2, 8, 13], he technically acquired or purchased the computer graphics division from Lucasfilm to create Pixar in 1986 [6, 9, 10]. He certainly played a massive role in its success, but he helped it spin off into its own company rather than starting it from scratch! 10
