Trump Didn't Rename New Mexico. He Just Reposted the Hoax That Said He Did.

Renaming a geographic feature like a gulf or a lake for federal use is one thing — a president can direct agencies to use a new name under existing authority, which is how "Gulf of America" and "Lake America" happened. Renaming a U.S. state is a different matter entirely: it would require action Congress hasn't taken, not a stroke of a pen. A president cannot unilaterally rename a state. ^[2]

Then, on Sunday evening, September 6, Trump posted a map on Truth Social showing a large "X" struck through "Mexico" in the state's name, with "AMERICA" written below it. Once Trump gave the idea his own megaphone, New Mexico's political establishment moved fast. Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said: "New Mexico's name isn't up for debate — it's been ours since before the United States existed." ^[1]

The state's congressional delegation piled on. Sen. Martin Heinrich said he'd keep calling places "by their actual names. The Gulf of Mexico. Lake Ontario. New Mexico." ^[3] Rep.
