FactCheck.org published a new debunking on February 13, 2026, describing it as a "long-ago debunked" claim being recycled ^[1]. The pattern is clear: old disinformation waits for the right moment to resurface.

Musk voted by mail himself, then spent years calling the practice fraud. California state voting records obtained by NBC News reveal that Elon Musk voted by mail in the 2016 and 2018 general elections ^[3]. Yet on October 18, 2024, at a town hall event, Musk declared: "In my opinion, we should have paper ballots only. It should be in-person voting with ID. End of story" ^[2].

Musk has repeatedly criticized mail-in voting, calling it "insane" ^[3] and writing that voting by mail "has been recognized as an invitation to fraud throughout the world" ^[2]. Meanwhile, his America PAC—which he funded with roughly $75 million in contributions made between July and September 2024 ^[13]—actively promoted absentee voting in swing states through the website votesafe.org, describing it as "a secure way for people to support Trump" ^[2].

The contradiction is stark: publicly crusade against mail-in voting while privately using it and funding infrastructure that promotes it.

Trump vowed to ban mail-in voting by executive fiat while his own party quietly banked votes through it. On August 18, 2025, President Trump announced: "I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also...VOTING MACHINES" ^[4]. Mail voting expanded dramatically during COVID-19 without a corresponding spike in fraud.
