Hollywood Sign AI Fire Image: Viral Fake During LA Wildfires

PolitiFact reported that a computer science expert who examined one widely shared image found the number of support lattices behind the letter "H" did not match the number visible in verified photos of the real sign — a structural inconsistency typical of AI generation ^[1].

Separately, UC Berkeley digital-forensics researcher Hany Farid told interviewers he had reviewed roughly a dozen manipulated Hollywood sign images and videos circulating that week, noting that in at least one version the word "Hollywood" itself was misspelled ^[3].

NBC Los Angeles reported that the sign, located on Mount Lee, was never placed in an active evacuation zone, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) ^[2].

The nearby Sunset Fire, which broke out in the Hollywood Hills, burned on the opposite side of the 101 Freeway from the sign and was brought under control within hours ^[2].

Hollywood Sign Trust chair Jeff Zarrinnam told Forbes, as reported by NBC Los Angeles, that the landmark was "so far safe" ^[2].
